One thought on “Christians, Libertarians, and Distributists

  1. I am puzzled how the author can assert this: “Both parties [distributists and libertarians] can agree or come near to it on several key principles: no property taxes, minimal regulations, generally low taxation, limited or non-existent central governance, and no government bailouts or subsidies for major corporations.”

I fail to see how distributism mandates no property taxes, minimal regulations or limited or non-existent central governance. It is true that guilds would do most of the regulating, but this is not the same thing as libertarian de-regulation. As far as limited or non-existent central governance, – if we are talking about a country it must have some sort of government, otherwise it is not a country. It is true that the central government would do much less than it does not, but this is hardly a non-existent governance. Distributism seeks to subordinate economic activity to the common good. Libertarianism hardly recognizes that there is a common good. The spirit of the two systems are totally opposed to each other.
