  1. The article is useful in identifying the different categories applicable to an understanding of homelessness. One thing must be stressed however in addressing the conclusions and suggested solutions at the end. There is no practical mechanism at present for local communities to effectively deal with homelessness thanks to U.S. Supreme Court precedent by which state intervention is limited to those among the homeless who can be proven to pose an imminent threat to themselves or others. As such communities will have little or no success in both protecting communities from the blight of piles of trash and waste on public streets, or in directly intervening in the lives of the homeless, who in many if not most cases fail to fully comprehend their plight and the causes of their plight.

  2. Thank you for pointing this out. This interference by centralized government is one of the reasons that distributism emphasizes subsidiarity as one of the critical elements of a truly free society.

  3. Government at any level should not be involved. Only individuals and charities should help the homeless,

  4. Dear Anonymous, That is a common sentiment, especially among those with a more Libertarian view. However, this site is about Distributism, and while Distributism emphasizes assistance from individuals, charities, and other organizations like guilds, we do not accept the view which you propose. There are plenty of articles explaining why we believe this to be the case. I also gave a thorough explanation to why I believe you are wrong on this point in my recent book, Distributism Basics: Foundational Principles.

  5. My only criticism with this article is it tends to ignore the effects of varying aspects of capitalism, particularly global capitalism, and how it affects the homeless problem. Considering the soul of a community is oftentimes crushed by interference by large entities with no responsibility or stake in the local community, this stymies economic growth and opportunity which itself prevents many from accomplishing individual and familial economic goals.

  6. Thank you for your input. I can understand your criticism. The point of the article was addressing the typical proposed “solutions” offered by society, particularly when it is nearing an election. The cause you mentioned is briefly alluded to in the third category of homeless I outline, 'those who are “down on their luck.' They are the ones whose jobs have been eliminated or outsourced to other areas. They do not have the means to get the training they need to change careers or to move to where the jobs are.”I admit this does not specifically point out that these situations are created by the capitalist system under which we live, which is a point discussed in other articles.
