The Praise of Impracticality

15 February, 2018

by Maciek Wąs One of the main – and the oldest – charges raised against distributism is that it is “impractical”; at least as far as I know the case. In my personal experience I have encountered this obstacle hundreds and hundreds of times. In most cases, when I try to convince somebody to become … More The Praise of Impracticality

Self-sufficiency and economic freedom

16 November, 2017

by Patrick Toner Hilaire Belloc’s Essay on the Restoration of Property is a remarkably well-written book.  Put aside the question of whether Belloc is right or wrong about any of his contentions: the book is thoroughly lucid.  It’s also organic—you really can’t dip into it at random, you need to get ahold of the ideas … More Self-sufficiency and economic freedom

3 November, 2017

by Thomas Storck Roque Dalton, the Salvadoran Marxist poet and journalist (died 1975), wrote a poem, called in Spanish “Acta,” rendered in English as “Act,” which is a powerful indictment of economic injustice. The poem runs in part (as translated by Jack Hirschman): In the name of those washing others’ clothes (and cleansing others’ filth … More Is Private Property an Evil?

2 September, 2016

by Thomas Storck Based on a talk given at The American Chesterton Society Conference 5 August, 2016 When we look at the economic conduct of mankind and ask ourselves why the human race engages in such activities, I suppose that everyone would admit that we do so in order to produce goods and services for … More What is the purpose of our economic activity?

Reasoned Voting – Part 2

18 August, 2016

In their attempts to convince others to vote for a particular candidate, many people are using arguments that invoke the fundamental principles of reason from the philosophical sciences. Unfortunately, many of these invocations use these arguments in an improper way. I addressed some of the most common in a recent article titled Reasoned Voting. I … More Reasoned Voting – Part 2

Distributism is not about government redistribution. Distributism (a.k.a. Localism) advocates the greatest amount of private, locally owned, independent businesses, focusing on strong local economies as the foundation of a strong national economy. It also advocates the decentralization of government authority over the current trend of relying on a central government that constantly increases its power.
