Is Private Property an Evil?

3 November, 2017

by Thomas Storck Roque Dalton, the Salvadoran Marxist poet and journalist (died 1975), wrote a poem, called in Spanish “Acta,” rendered in English as “Act,” which is a powerful indictment of economic injustice. The poem runs in part (as translated by Jack Hirschman): In the name of those washing others’ clothes (and cleansing others’ filth … More Is Private Property an Evil?

Subsidiarity vs. Single Payer 2

7 September, 2017

Unfortunately, the circumstances of life prevented me from addressing Jack Quirk’s response to my previous article on this topic before now. Given the amount of time, I considered moving on to other topics, but there were several points he claimed that I think really need to be addressed. Therefore, with apologies to our readers, and … More Subsidiarity vs. Single Payer 2

Society would break down.  For there … More Catholic Social Teaching and Conventional Economics

Distributism Basics: Distributism vs. Christian Socialism

18 September, 2014

One reaction to this Distributism Basics series is that a particular group of commenters has asserted that their economic and political theories are so close to distributism as to make them virtually indistinguishable. In various ways, they have assured me that, if I would only read the writings explaining their views, I would be left … More Distributism Basics: Distributism vs. Christian Socialism

Distributism is not about government redistribution. Distributism (a.k.a. Localism) advocates the greatest amount of private, locally owned, independent businesses, focusing on strong local economies as the foundation of a strong national economy. It also advocates the decentralization of government authority over the current trend of relying on a central government that constantly increases its power.
