Buildings, Babies, and Changing Our Thinking

7 August, 2023

by Thomas Storck Although there are still quite a number of people clinging to the idea that the world is afflicted by a crisis of overpopulation, those who are aware of the statistics know better. In fact, a demographic collapse seems much more likely than a crisis of too many people. Keeping in mind the … More Buildings, Babies, and Changing Our Thinking

CAPITALISM: the Concept and the Reality

6 March, 2023

by Thomas Storck Max Weber’s 1904 book, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, has given rise over the last century and more to robust discussion about the spirit of capitalism. Is there such a thing as the spirit of capitalism and if so, what exactly is it, and how is that different from … More CAPITALISM: the Concept and the Reality

Real and Ideal in Catholic Social Doctrine

15 December, 2022

by Thomas Storck Capitalism and communism are equally representative forms of this tendency of the world today not only to ignore Christianity, but to supplant it. To speak more precisely, the civilization of capitalism, as it was developed during the nineteenth century through the application to industry of the discoveries of experimental science, has … More Real and Ideal in Catholic Social Doctrine

This is gratifying, for I would hazard a guess that fifty years ago almost no one had even heard of distributism. But even though the situation today is in most respects an improvement, these online references to distributism … More Is Distributism Socialism?

A Road Not Taken

9 June, 2021

by Thomas Storck   On Sunday May 8, 1949 The New York Times published a short article entitled “Vatican Paper Assails ‘Atheism’ in Capitalism.” Consisting of only three short paragraphs the article refers to an article just published in the Vatican’s newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, and written by that paper’s editor-in-chief, Count Giuseppe Dalla Torre. The … More A Road Not Taken

Distributism is not about government redistribution. Distributism (a.k.a. Localism) advocates the greatest amount of private, locally owned, independent businesses, focusing on strong local economies as the foundation of a strong national economy. It also advocates the decentralization of government authority over the current trend of relying on a central government that constantly increases its power.
